Who we are

The council of the NZABC is comprised of representatives of our members. We consider industry related issues and policy and speak publicly to our consumers. If you are an alcohol related industry group, you are welcome to apply for membership. New membership will be considered by the council and it has sole discretion.

Economy

The alcohol industry is a huge economic contributor to New Zealand. Thousands of kiwis are employed both directly and indirectly in the industry or related jobs. Our booming tourism industry helps support that, with over 60% of tourists visiting a vineyard.

Better still, they take our products home with them and tell their friends. So much of what’s good about our country comes from the sensible and responsible association that most kiwis have with alcohol. We don’t want that to change.

Culture & history

History has shown us that when people try to block, control or stop access to something that most of us enjoy, unintended consequences shoot up all over the place. Look no further than the old “6 o’clock swill” that still leaves an imprint on our culture today.

That 50 year tradition, ending in 1967 came from a law that was designed to restrict the times people could buy and consume alcohol in a public house, so they could then go home to their families. Instead, people consumed as much beer as they possibly could before 6pm closing and went home drunk and disorderly through the streets to their homes.
